Colonial Heritage Improvements – Phase II

A new project is coming to the Colonial Heritage neighborhood!

In 2023, the Colonial Heritage Wetlands project improved drainage in the Colonial Heritage neighborhood and the Tuckers Court subdivision. A two-stage ditch was installed to store stormwater runoff, and a bioswale was created to collect and direct flow through the site towards the Trier Ditch. A wetland area, filled with native flowers and grasses, was established to promote water quality as well as access to nature. A walking trail throughout the site allows residents to explore the wetlands and learn more about stormwater management.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with neighborhood residents. While the project has been successful, and now additional amenities are asked for to enhance the experience and enjoyment of nature in an urban wetland.  Phase II will add seating and lighting to improve accessibility and visibility along the pathways.

This fall, a new project will be coming to the Colonial Heritage Wetlands to make improvements geared at increasing access, use, and enjoyability of this stormwater site. The new project will include lighting, benches, entrance signage, and native plantings, with the intention of creating an enjoyable and safe stormwater park for residents to enjoy, bringing them closer to nature.

This project received the 2025 Agile Grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne in the amount of $10,000 to install wiring and lighting around the existing walking trail.

This project received a 2026 Community Challenge Flagship Grant from AARP in the amount of $13,275 to install ADA-compliant benches on concrete pads. An entrance sign will also be installed through this funding to increase awareness of the site. Thanks to AARP for the generous support that made this project possible.
