Drinking Water Safe Amid Taste Changes

Fort Wayne, Indiana — Our rivers are never the same from minute to minute. Rain and snow melt upstream of Fort Wayne, bringing varying organic compounds into our rivers, which can cause a difference in our water’s taste and sometimes odor. These changes occur naturally nearly every year in Fort Wayne and across the country.

Some individuals may have recently noticed a slight difference in water taste and smell, but residents can be assured that our water is safe to drink.

Our chemists at the Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant monitor and test the water multiple times a day. Our staff has modified the plant’s treatment process to address the impact of the changes on the St. Joseph River, but these modifications will not completely eliminate the “earthy/organic” smell and taste until the compounds are flushed out of the river.
